For my my Youtube videos i've been using Descript and have enjoyed it somewhat. Transcript-based editing is a transformational feature, and one which I do not want to give up. Descript does a pretty good job at this, and as far as I know were the ones to popularize it in the first place. However, their app is slow. I don't mean the UI itself, but when scrubbing around videos or additional video assets within a project it buffers... The play button starts spinning and you just have to wait. This is a huge letdown. I'm running the app on desktop so it should be using local files. I confirmed that Descript is using remote assets by disabling internet access and everything failed. What the hell Descript? I suspect they (Descript) want to unify their engineering efforts around a single app experience, and since they want to support the web that means the desktop experience will have to adhere to the web experience. However, if that's actually the reason then it's very disappointing. Streamlining one's own software eng at the expense of one's customers. Although their docs say that offline is supported, one of their support reps told me that _that's no longer the case_ and the docs simply haven't been updated. That's really too bad, since they made a name for themselves by making editing somewhat less tedious. A slow editing experience is a step backwards. I'd actually like to use capcut. seems like a good fit for the kind of vidoes i want to make, includes things like stickers and b-roll. But how is it that they support transcript based editing on all platforms _EXCEPT_ mac? whats even more outrageous is that the feature is in the codebase! I once was able to get it to open, but never again. i don't even remember what i did because I figured if I could do it once i could replicate, and I could not. So, capcut works, but not on mac. however, there may be a saving grace: The Chinese version! That is, 剪映. It's ostensibly the same software but transcript based editing works on mac. there is zero localization, so the entire thing is in Chinese. That's fine though. The stumbling block I hit here is that _i can't pay for it_, because i'm not connected to the Chinese banking infra. If you want to pay it presents you with a QR code to do so via a number of Chinese payment providers, none of which I have access to. I'm sure I can find someone who is able to pay on my behalf, so I may revisit this, but for now i'm looking at other options.
