Well, sort of viral. She had a post about the recent fires in souther California that has, as of this writing, been shared 15k times! That's a serious outlier in terms of her usual share traffic. # Everyone has an audience I think there is a potential audience for everyone. Or, to put it differently, I think anyone can find their people online. Just yesterday I was on the phone with my mom and one of the topics of conversation was the fires in souther california. I was, and am still, mostly uninterested. I'm happy to talk about things that interest family members, but the topic holds no interest to me personally. Why? Because it's not actionable. California has fires. This is a simple statement of fact. Since i'm not in a position to affect the response to or prevention of fires in California i'm generally uninterested in this topic. Alternatively, California having yet another fire simply matches my expectations of California. It doesn't inform my expectations. It doesn't change what I expect, and is therefore uninteresting. The point that I'm working toward here is this: Even though I find the topic uninteresting, many people find it _very_ interesting. Interesting enough to share with their friends on Facebook. **This is a beautiful thing.** My mom is intrinsically interested in this topic, and as such it's not "work" for her to go find relevant information and synthesize it into a post. Now that she's done that and posted it thousands of others who have similar interest get to benefit from reading her words. This feels like the promise of social media playing out in a way. It is perhaps unfortunate that whether or not others see her work, or your work, or anyone's work is dependent on black box algorithms. It's further unfortunate that all of this is in service to showing ads to would be readers of such content. Still, I don't want to be a downer here. I do feel that people with similar interests sharing and discovering each others content is a very good thing. It's wonderful that like-minded people can find each other online, and to my initial point: People have such varied interests that whatever your interests are, there are (at least) thousands of other that share them. Find your people. Cheers 👏
